Dear parents,

as a continuation of the lessons about handwashing and a healthy lunchbox, yesterday we discussed different healthy habits that we should practice like exercise, handwashing, eat fruit and vegetables, drink plenty of water etc as well as about others we should avoid such as eating junk food and sweets and spending a lot of time watching tv or playing computer games.

As shown in the photos and videos below, the children had the opportunity to revise addition and subtraction sums, move the beebot onto the numbered mat according to the answers and finally tell him (the beebot) whether the picture next to each number shows a healthy or unhealthy habit. In another activity they also sorted out the pictures of the different habits as good or bad practices using tuxpaint.

Dear parents,

as you well know, busy kids need a healthy school lunch to boost their energy and help them concentrate and learn, especially in the afternoon. One of this week’s lessons was about the importance of a healthy lunchbox where we talked about foods that keep them healthy as well as others that are less healthy. They also had the opportunity to create a virtual lunchbox using tuxpaint. They were given the chance to decide for themselves which healthy food to put in their lunchbox and healthy drinks to go with the food of course :). While some were working on the computer others did the same activity in groups by colouring and then cutting pictures of food and pasting them on a lunchbox printable. Then they swapped activity.

You can see videos and photos of them creating their lunchboxbelow.

A good website which in my opinion, can provide you with some good healthy lunchbox ideas and recipes is:

This presentation / story was created by me with the help of my students and IT teacher Mr Grima.

First, the topic was introduced when pictures, were shown to the kids to emphasise the importance of hand washing example after touching a pet, playing at the park, making crafts and touching our nose or mouth (especially when sick).

It was drawn to their attention that the sequence of pictures lacked sound and text and needs to form a proper story like when reading books online. The children discussed with me what sentences to write under each picture . Some typed the sentences under each picture on the software Microsoft Office Powerpoint. Next, the pictures with the text were imported onto the program Microsoft Photostory.

Afterwards it was time for “recording point”! Some children were invited to add voice to the sentences by recording their own voice whilst reading them.

This way of working was really fun for the kids as they were creating their own story in a very informal way while making use of IT tools. The recordings allowed the children to then listen to their own voice thus making them more aware of the importance of good pronunciation. This activity also provided a good opportunity to practice writing and speaking skills. Children worked in pairs or together as a group.

Finally I added some background music and motions to the pictures.

The children are very proud to have created this presentation and is now accessible to their parents, relatives and friends. 🙂 Below you can watch the video of the presentation as well as other videos and photos of the writing process.

Photos of another activity called “Glitter Germs” to help children learn how germs are shared and transmitted will be posted soon.

Dear parents,

the Health and Safety Unit is working to promote awareness among all students on health and safety issues through the project Catch’em Young. Today we had our fourth visit from our health and safety teacher, Ms Donella Mercieca where she spoke and showed the kids a powerpoint presentation and a video about

The Importance of Physical Exercise.

You can find similar videos about Crawford the cat on youtube.

They also enjoyed assembling a jigsaw puzzle of pictures of different physical activities like football, dancing etc.

Other lessons that the children had with Ms Mercieca were about:

  • Washing Hands
  • Brushing Teeth (Oral Hygiene)
  • Personal Hygiene

A lesson about Nutrition and Rest will follow soon.

Below you can find photos of today’s lesson as well as two short video clips.

Regards
